Educational psychology assessment

The approach to an educational psychology assessment will depend on the child or young person, their needs and circumstances. With professional judgement used to determine which assessment approach is most appropriate. It is likely to include gathering the child or young person’s views, the parent/carer’s views, information from educational settings, assessment of areas of challenge the child/young person is experiencing and recommendations for support.

Assessment of areas of challenge

The assessment is an evaluation, or estimation, of skills/abilities and/or qualities, in areas such as learning, emotional and behavioural responses and communication and interaction etc. There are many ways an assessment may be completed, and this may include:  

  • A review of other professional reports
  • Questionnaires
  • Observation
  • Play based assessment
  • Consultation
  • Scaling methods
  • Dynamic assessments
  • Personal construct Psychology
  • Cognitive assessments

Educational Psychologist’s Report

The content and format of reports will differ depending on the purpose of the assessment. They will include a summary of information gathered, professional judgement regarding the child’s skills and needs, as well as the implications and limitations of the evidence gathered. Recommendations for areas requiring support, and strategies to be put in place will be made.
